Why We Demand On Demand

CONTENTS

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • With on-demand learning, individuals can learn on their own schedule. This flexibility empowers learners to absorb material at their own speed, reinforcing understanding and retention.

  • Employers benefit from on-demand training as it increases employee satisfaction and productivity. With flexible, scalable training options, teams avoid missing key sessions and new hires can get up to speed quickly.

  • Learners retain more when they can immediately apply new skills in real-world contexts. On-demand training supports this by offering continuous access to material, allowing for spaced repetition—proven to enhance long-term retention.

  • On-demand training offers a standardized learning experience, maintaining high quality across all lessons. This is particularly valuable for teams, ensuring that everyone is trained uniformly and speaks the same language.

We live in an increasingly on-demand world.

When was the last time you sat down at an exact time to watch a new episode of a TV show? Going a little further, when was the last time you raced home because if you missed this episode there was no way to catch up?

Even highly anticipated series that air on popular channels (think The Great British Bake Off) have lost their sense of urgency since their availability on streaming apps mean viewers can tune in at their own leisure when it suits them. When the popular HBO series Euphoria aired at the beginning of this year, viewers with access were able to catch it HBOMax at their own pace. No need to wait for an ad break to rush to the bathroom, you can pause whenever you need.

This is all without touching on streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. Culturally, we have established what we want from the media we consume: we want them to be easy to access and available when we want them. With that, we want to be able to consume them at our own pace. We want it on-demand!

If this is how people want to experience their entertainment, why would they want their education to be different? In the last few years, even before most businesses were forced to go remote, there has been an undeniable rise in digital, on-demand learning. Think about the popularity of language-learning apps like Duolingo! And even more recently, the advantages of on-demand learning and training have been proven, with many universities continuing to provide online lectures alongside in-person teaching.

At MEDDICC, we are massive advocates of On-Demand Learning and Training. That’s why we have our online sales training in MEDDPICC! But why should you choose on-demand over in-person?

Give Power to the Learner

The flexibility of on-demand allows the learner to take control - they can tailor the training to their own schedule, and learn at their own pace. It means that when they need information, knowledge is at their fingertips. The convenience of on-demand training also means the learner can take their time if they need to. Need to pause to take notes, and then read over those notes? Easy-peasy! You can go as fast or as slow as you want.

Improve Your Work Environment

From an employer’s point of view, on-demand training is incredibly beneficial. One benefit is that it improves the experience of your employees. 78% of executives and managers responding to a Future of Work survey listed “flexible schedules and telecommuting” as their most effective (non-monetary) ways to increase employee retention. By providing your employees with on-demand training, you allow them to create their own schedule, which will increase their morale and productivity! On top of that, on-demand training is scalable. Since you can buy licenses as and when you need them, employees do not need to worry about missing a session for whatever reason, and new hires can be brought up to speed with ease. Gone are the days of waiting for the next session, and hoping they can get by without it.

Shop Around

No matter how skilled an instructor is, sometimes their teaching style just won’t work for you. With on-demand training, you can simply trial one license instead of needing to make a large capital investment in an in-person course. This way, you can avoid wasting time and money on training that will not achieve the desired results, and instead find the perfect instructor and perfect course for you and your team. No need to invite a variety of consultants in, you can focus instead on maximising your learning in the best way.

More Effective Learning

Studies have shown that when you implement what you’ve learned immediately, you retain a higher percentage of information. With on-demand training, learners don’t need to wait until a class or course is finished to apply what they’ve learned - they can use it right away! This real-world application will help keep the material fresh in their mind, and they will be able to use it again in the future. Josh Bersin, founder of Bersin by Deloitte and major advocate for digital learning, points out that, “Neurological research has proved that we don’t learn well through ‘binge education’ like a course." Instead, research shows that with spaced repetition of information, we enhance our understanding of the material, as well as our retention rate! Since you can revisit on-demand training whenever you’d like, whenever you need a refresher, it’s ready and waiting for you. Not only that, it’s scientifically proven to improve your learning! Get More Value

In terms of sheer numbers, the investment required for on-demand training for the benefits reaped is lower than that of in-person training. Outside of paying an instructor for their time (be they interior or exterior), costs can stack up when it comes to expenditure on travel and facilities. We firmly believe that the outcome for in-person doesn’t provide more value than on-demand. Additionally, on-demand allows for a more valuable use of time. Our on-demand program takes just over five hours; however, if we deliver it in person, it takes 16. Part of this is due to discussion to enhance learning, but also because, despite our best efforts, live training is less articulate and can’t be edited. The overall process is more efficient - learners can get started instantly, without having to coordinate sessions with the instructor.

Stay Up-to-Date

With on-demand training, information is easy to update. You never stop learning, and that goes for your instructors too! As they uncover more useful material, the information provided can be updated with ease. This means that you and your employees aren’t in danger of receiving out-of-date information, and can stay educated on topics as they evolve. As an example, our MEDDPICC Masterclass has been updated with more helpful tips since its initial creation, because we understand that learning isn’t linear!

Stay Consistent

One of the downsides of more traditional, in-person learning is that while you can have some really great instructors, even the most experienced and gifted people are not all natural teachers. This means that some parts of a course could be excellent, with others not reaching as high a standard. With on-demand learning, there is greater consistency; each aspect of the training is of the same exceptional quality. This consistency filters through to the businesses that implement the training as well. No matter at what point someone joins the team, they receive the same training as everyone else. One of the aims of our MEDDPICC Masterclass is to ensure the entire team is speaking the same language, and on-demand training makes sure that everyone is communicating along the same wavelength.
